Sculpting the Portrait in Clay
Time & Location
About The Class
Learn to sculpt the portrait with a focus on skull anatomy, musculature, expression and proportion. Since antiquity, artists have been sculpting expressive portraits and a focus on just the head and shoulders offers a close-up study. Beginner and intermediate. No experience necessary. Small class size. Materials and model fee included!
About my Approach
I joke sometimes when people say things like "well it's not carved in stone" because, in my world, sometimes it is. The permanence of a work of art can be very intimidating. Perfectionism is the enemy of good art and has caused me much grief. This is why I approach my classes by focusing on process rather than product.
In these classes, we will work rapidly and there will be space to take risks. My first sculpture teacher told me after chopping the poorly constructed nose off of a portrait, "You've done it once, the next time you do it will be twice as good. Start again."
In the earlier stages of learning to draw, paint, or sculpt the focus is on looking, seeing, trying, trying again and again. While we will have photographic evidence of the work we've done, we will not fuss over casting and finishing our sculptures. Rather, we will have the skills to approach the next one. And the next. And the next.
